The South Coast Youth Corps offers in-depth learning and leadership opportunities for young people ages 16–18 who are interested in outdoor environmental work. The Youth Corps offers full time paid positions during the months of July and August in Fall River and New Bedford. Youth Corps Members work in crews of 8-10 youth with a Crew Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor to assist with the stewardship of forests, farms, beaches and parks, by completing hands-on projects that range from planting trees and growing vegetables to removing invasive species and clearing trails. Daily journaling, group discussions, and reflection time provide an opportunity for youth to reflect on their experience while exploring  their ideals and beliefs. The South Coast Youth Corps offers a powerful experience that incorporates academic and work skills into practical projects that provide real benefits to the local community and environment.

Activities include:

  • Collect and analyze environmental data.
  • Tree planting, stream surveys, water quality testing, and invasive species control.
  • Work in community gardens to plant, weed, water, harvest, and distribute vegetables.
  • Carpentry projects such as the construction of bridges, boardwalks, and picnic tables.
  • Assist with education programs, such as leading summer nature programs for children, creating interpretive materials, and designing educational activities.
  • Prepare mailings, deliver presentations to community groups, and staff tables at public events.
  • Trail maintenance, mowing, trash cleanup, stone wall clearing, and sign installation.
  • Maintain student journal with personal reflections and observations from fieldwork.
  • Participate in group discussions, teambuilding, and leadership development activities.
  • Work with individuals from partner organizations including SEEAL, YouthBuild, City Water and Parks Departments, state forest rangers and superintendents, property managers, and ecologists.
