Overview:

The Trustees of Reservations is looking for an enthusiastic person to help coordinate the care and maintenance of a newly constructed greenhouse and native plant nursery.  Located at Land of Providence (LOP) in Holyoke this greenhouse will nurture plants for use onsite and eventually to all Trustees properties.

This is an exciting position that can be shaped based on personal experience and interest. This position will be guided by, and work closely with, the LOP staff Property Manager.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the care and maintenance of the plants and the greenhouse
  • Coordinate with a small group of volunteers to accomplish necessary maintenance tasks
  • Help transplant the seedlings into the forest once established
Qualifications:

Required:

  • Knowledge of native plants
  • Basic construction skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with volunteers and TTOR staff

Desired:

  • Conversational Spanish
  • Experience with landscaping or gardening
  • Handiness with irrigation and carpentry
  • Teaching experience


Location
Based out of the Holyoke office and the Land of Providence farm

Physical Demands:
  • Standing for extended periods with occasional bending
  • Walking on uneven ground
  • Exposure to the elements (heat, mosquitoes, sun, wind)
  • Lifting up to 40 lbs
  • Potential exposure to Poison Ivy
Training & Support:

Staff will provide:

  • skill development in growing plants in a nursery
  • instruction in planting native trees and shrubs
  • an understanding of the importance of native habitat restoration

Time Commitment:
At least 3 hours per week, 4 months minimum
