Migratory Shorebird Monitors

Location:
Crane Beach on the Crane Estate
Responsibilities:
The Crane Estate encompasses many precious resources – 2,100 acres of rare ecosystems, historic structures, a National Historic Landmark, dunes and a barrier beach, and many wild creatures (from piping plovers to wild turkeys, barnacles to deer). But YOU, our volunteers, are our most precious resource! Many opportunities abound for fun, learning, and assisting in our work of preserving and sharing this special place.

Volunteer benefits include:

  • Learning new skills and meeting others with similar interests
  • Free training
  • Close interaction with our seasoned staff of historians, ecologists, event planners, interpreters, horticulturalists and educators
  • Regular recognition for your contributions
  • Special invitations (and reduced or free admission) to exciting events
  • The heartfelt thanks of the Trustees!

Our shorebird monitors help Crane Beach ecologists and rangers protect migrating shorebirds on the beach. Volunteers will interact with the public around high tide about the importance of the beach for migratory shorebirds and general beach ecology.

Preferred Skills &
Abilities:
Shorebird monitors should enjoy interacting with the public and educating them about the natural world. You will need to be physically fit as you will walk one mile to the shorebird roosting area and back.

Training will be provided. Knowledge and identification of shorebirds is helpful, however, an understanding of the role Crane Beach plays in the southward migration of shorebirds is most important.

Time Commitment:
5-hour shifts (2 hours before and after high tide), between mid-July and Labor Day, especially weekends.
Volunteers Needed:
No limit
