| Responsibilities: |
Invasive plant species are a significant threat to the native forest plant communities of Whitney-Thayer Woods. Significant infestations of garlic mustard, black swallow-wort, and woody invasives, such as glossy buckthorn and multiflora rose, are known to occur. Volunteer(s) will remove known invasive populations and monitor trails for new infestations. Woody invasive plants can be controlled almost anytime except winter. Herbaceous invasive plants should be removed before they set seed. Hand tools and/or hand pulling will be used to remove invasive plants. New invasive populations will be mapped using GPS. |
| Preferred Skills & Abilities: |
Ability to safely use hand tools. |
| Time Commitment: |
Flexible. Control of herbaceous plants (e.g., garlic mustard) will require scheduling work in early spring before the plant sets seed. Woody invasives can be removed during spring, summer and fall. |
