Our Stewards in Action program has been reimagined this year to provide a new camp experience focused on learning while doing activities that make a difference. We know our stewards, especially those who have come to SummerQuest as Questers, are ready for new challenges, so each week will provide adventurous, engaging experiences focused around environmental stewardship and sustainability, including offsite adventures and fieldtrips. Our goal for this newly redesigned program is to strengthen the connection between teens and their local environment while building skills and fostering a sense of personal ownership and responsibility for their world.
July 8 - 12: Great Migrations
Have you ever wondered how far animals travel over the winter? Animals migrate all over the world by land, sea or the air to reach far places for the winter and return the following year. Campers will get to know all these incredible creatures and their various modes of transportation. We will work alongside experts to become citizen scientists and contribute to the collaborative effort to save these species.
July 15 - 19: Travel The Trustees
Did you know that The Trustees has more than 100 properties, many on the North Shore? This week, Stewards will visit Trustees properties around the North Shore - including farms, rocky shores, and coastal wetlands - and explore some of the natural places this organization has to offer. We will see new environments, have new adventures, and get our hands dirty with environmental conservation projects that will help us leave a positive mark on the landscape.
July 22 - 26: Uncover the Past at the Estate
Ipswich has a long history dating back to 1600s, much of which has been forgotten from the landscape. Stewards this week will learn about the facets that make this property unique while exploring all the nooks and crannies of rarely visited sites such as the Choate House to uncover and rediscover the past. We will also explore the history and culture of Castle Hill with a behind-the-scenes experience of the Great House and learn the fine art of historical restoration.
July 29 - August 2: Tricks of the Trade
The Crane Estate is a big place and takes a diverse team to keep things running smoothly. Every day, hundreds of people work to make the estate a beautiful and educational place to visit. This week we will go behind the scenes and take part in working with various members of the team – many in jobs we bet you never knew existed! Get a taste of history and art with our curator, gain a new appreciation for the formal gardens with our horticulturist, and learn about coastal stewardship from our ecology team - just to name a few!
August 5 - 9: Coastal Science
Areas where the sea meets the shore are some of the most diverse, interesting, and harsh ecosystems in the world. Here at the Crane Estate we are in a perfect position to explore estuaries, salt marshes, coastal dunes, and the barrier beach itself. Working alongside experts with professional equipment and techniques, campers will become citizen scientists through observation, exploration, experimentation, and conservation.
August 12 - 16: The Great Rowing Adventure **SPECIAL PROGRAM**
We’ll start the week at Lowell’s Boat Shop to learn rowing techniques and water safety -- and then we’re off! This session is all about the journey, and what we see and learn along the way. We’ll row a 12-seat surf dory down the Merrimack, duck into the creeks behind Plum Island, and stop at various points of interest until we reach the Crane Estate. There will be an overnight campout in the Pine Grove, a jaunt to Essex for ice cream, a tour of the Essex Shipbuilding Museum to learn about traditional wooden boats, and an exploration of Choate Island. You won’t want to miss this journey!
We are excited to present this program in collaboration with Lowell’s Boat Shop. Parents will drop off and pick up at the Crane Estate.
