For 2020, we have expanded and deepened our offerings for our farm-loving teens ages 13-15. With 4 week-long sessions divided into two focused themes, there is something for new and returning Appleton teens who are interested in real-life experiences on a working farm.
“Farmers, Artisans, Chefs”
Teens will explore the many aspects of living on a farm. From growing vegetables to cooking healthy meals, from managing livestock to producing artisanal cheese and so much more. Apprentices will develop life skills through authentic projects such as caring for farm animals, designing meals with seasonal produce, and building connections with community experts. Throughout the week, Apprentices will discover how local farming supports the health of the environment, community, and our bodies. Register for one or two or both weeks – they will build on each for those interested in a deeper experience yet also relevant as stand-alone programs.
“From the Farm to the Wild”
Teens will discover the different ecosystems at Appleton from the cow pasture to the woodlots. Exploring alongside Trustees ecologists, Apprentices will learn about introduced species, design solutions for habitat restoration, and discover the concept of agroecology which is creating a balance between the farm and the wild. Activities will include biodiversity studies, invasive species removal, and learning from community experts. Register for one or two or both weeks – they will build on each for those interested in a deeper experience yet also relevant as stand-alone programs.

The Foragers and Apprentices sessions offer an optional evening dinner. This special after-hours add-on gives older campers an exclusive opportunity to experience last afternoon farm activities that do not otherwise get to experience. We plan and cook a dinner together with our garden harvest, welcome in the cows, learn how our farmers do their milking chores and spend some extra time with new friends, telling stories, and playing games.
NOTE: Campers who register for Thursday Late Night will be picked up at 7PM instead of 3PM.
