REI Wilderness Survival: Winter Skills

  • Fitness level 3: Moderate 
    Trails in rolling terrain with some steep sections. Elevation changes of up to 3000 feet over distances of up to 10 miles per day hiking, or 6 miles per day backpacking. Altitude is below 10,000 ft.

  • Skill level 2: Intermediate 
    Comfortable hiking and am beginning to explore some new trails with more challenging terrain. I've got a backpack and want to learn how to use it more often.

Join REI Outdoor School for a wilderness self-reliance class that could save your life. During this class you will learn practical tips and strategies that every outdoor traveler should know including winter emergency priorities, how to make an emergency shelter, and how to make your own emergency kit with all the essentials. You will also participate in interactive scenarios to practice and hone your skills. This class is designed for anyone who spends time outdoors during the winter.

  • As a result of this class, participants will gain knowledge regarding
  • Winter Emergency Kits/Essentials
  • Winter Emergency Priorities
  • Winter Emergency Shelters

Bring to class:

(Required)

  • 2 Liters of Water - At least two one-liter water bottles, such as a Nalgene bottle, or a large hydration bladder, such as a Camelbak.
  • Daypack at least 30 Liters
  • Extra Warm Synthetic Clothing
  • Insulated/Waterproof Boots - Suitable for snowshoeing.
  • Lunch & Snacks
  • Rain Gear - Waterproof/resistant jacket, pants and hat.
  • Sun Protection - Lip balm, sunscreen, wide-brim hats, etc.
  • Warm Gloves
  • Warm Hat
  • Weather Appropriate Clothing - Moisture wicking synthetic or wool layers to help keep you comfortable and/or dry.

Appleton, Jr., and his wife Joan, Appleton Farms is one of the oldest continuously operating farms in the country, established and maintained by nine generations of the Appleton family. Six miles of footpaths, bridle paths, and farm roads (easy walking).
