Looking for more cool stuff to do?
We've got tons more fun events and programs in your area – sign up for our monthly enews here!

The Massachusetts Master Gardeners Association is presenting latest tips for home gardeners who wish to explore topics that complement the information covered in the classic Home Horticulture class. Classes cover starting your own herb garden, working with pets around gardens, and forcing bulbs for the holidays.  In partnership with The Trustees, the Massachusetts Master Gardeners will provide lectures and demonstrations once a month September 2017 to March 2018.  The classes take place the third Tuesday of the month, except for November due to the Thanksgiving holiday, and will instead be on the second Tuesday of November. The evening classes are 6:30 pm to 8 pm.

September 19 - "Preparing Soil" - Gretel Anspach   The quality and make-up of your soil has a huge influence on how well your plants will do. Unlike sunlight, air and water (the other 3 requirements), you can't tell whether your soils are right for your plants by looking at your soil or sometimes even looking at your plants. Learn about soil structure, compaction, fertility and pH, and how you can modify these for a more successful garden. The "Make It, Take It" - Bring a soil sample to check the pH level.

October 24 - "Establishing a Home Herb Garden" - Kathi Gariepy  Herb gardening has been popular for centuries. Herbs were not only culinary, as we think of them primarily today, but took care of the family providing medicine, herbs for dying cloths, herbs to keep the clothes and house fresh and many other uses. We will explore the world of herbs and take a look at a modern day herb garden. The "Make It, Take It" - we will also plant a small herb dish garden.

November 14 - "Forcing Bulbs for the Holidays" - Kathi Gariepy  Forcing bulbs are easy and fun. Learn about the history of bulbs, which bulbs are best for forcing and how and why they are able to bring fragrance, color and joy to the holiday season". The "Make It, Take It" - we will plant paperwhites for the December holiday season.

No lecture in December

January 23 - "Pets and Plants" - April Daley  Whether your pet is a cat, dog, chicken or "other" they have the potential to be exposed to your plants either indoors, outdoors, or both. There are many sources of information about plant toxicity but they can often conflict with each other. This presentation will help you to understand what "toxic" and "poisonous" mean to your pets as well as a method to evaluate the pet, the plant as well as horticultural practices and how much risk is involved in each situation.

February 20 - "Designing a Multi-Season Shade Garden" - Paul Steen  This talk covers a variety of shade situations and covers the unique problems/opportunities of shade gardening. We then cover the best shade plants and how to select them so that your garden is in bloom spring through fall. Even discuss how to have winter interest. Handout included covers a wide variety of shade plants and their cultural properties.

March 20 - "Easy Care Roses" - Eric Eisenhaurer  Grow beautiful healthy roses in your garden, without sprays and pesticides, by learning which roses are disease resistant, winter-hardy and the most reliable bloomers.

Registration and payment is through the Massachusetts Master Gardeners Association.  Fee:  $25 per class.
