Join Fruitlands Museum Curator, Shana Dumont Garr, and staff from the Trustees Archives and Research Center, for this in depth tour into the historic books that are a part our current exhibition “Literary Spirit at Fruitlands Museum and the Old Manse.” Dating from the 1600s through the 1800s, these rare tomes include personal copies inscribed by revered authors including Bronson Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Elizabeth Peabody. We will also provide the opportunity to have a closer look at unique manuscripts including hand-written letters by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Margaret Fuller, and an original essay by Henry David Thoreau.
This program will begin with a lesson in archival handling and discussion of best practices in preservation. Then tour the gallery with the case covers removed. Take a look inside some favorite selections from the exhibition and try your hand at handling a book of your choice.
Please note that space is limited and pre-registration is required.
