Crane Beach Dog Walking Regulations

Walk Your Green Dog  Arrow

Dog walking at Crane Beach is permitted between the rocks at the base of Castle Hill and the mouth of the Essex River. To protect adjacent shellfish beds from contamination, dogs are not permitted beyond the rocks at the base of Castle Hill or beyond the mouth of the Essex River.

  • In the area marked NO-LEASH ZONE to the left or west of the parking lots: dog walkers may walk dogs without a leash. Dogs in this zone must be kept close enough to obey a voice command and they must remain below the high tide or wrack line at all times. At times when Crane Beach or the no-leash zone is crowded, a beach ranger may require all dogs be leashed for all or part of the day. Dogs must be leashed immediately at the first sign of aggression or unruliness.

  • Green Dogs members will be held accountable for compliance with local leash laws and Crane Beach regulations. After two violations the Green Dogs permit will be revoked for the season. The individual will still be allowed access to the beach on subsequent visits, but will be unable to return with his/her dog for the remainder of the season. Revocation of a permit will not prevent the individual from acquiring a permit for the next season. Dog walkers who acquire a day pass for the Green Dogs program will be asked to leave the beach immediately following a violation.

  • Between October 1 and March 31 dog walking is permitted from 8AM until sunset.
