The Appleton family farm house, known affectionately as the "Old House," houses farm offices and a visitor center that is open to the public.

An energy-efficient "green building," the Old House Visitor Center is staffed with docents and features a family museum room furnished to represent the family's life in the mid-1800s, a research library with portraits and other historic artifacts, a classroom with seasonal education displays, and a state-of-the-art kitchen (details for kitchen below). The facility is fully handicapped accessible (ramps, rails, paths, and surfaces). The visitor center is central to the 1,000-acre working farm and offers easy access to the surrounding trails and farmstead area, including other historic buildings and pastures with grazing.

Our State-of-the-Art Kitchen
As part of the Appleton family farm house renovation, The Trustees completed the construction of a commercial grade kitchen and outdoor summer kitchen classroom. The facilities support a suite of farm- and food-based education programs for all ages. We are currently planning a suite of cooking demonstration and instruction courses that will focus on cooking and eating locally and seasonally.

Indoor and outdoor kitchen details:

  • A commercial-grade kitchen, where we will host farm-to-fork workshops and food-based education programs.
  • A re-creation of the Appleton’s traditional summer kitchen, a covered porch with stations to support most rough food preparation during warm months. Once common on farms, summer kitchens have all but disappeared, making ours important for both historic and practical reasons.
  • An outdoor classroom with a covered terrace providing additional learning and food-preparation space in pleasant weather.
