Starting in the 1930s, Moose Hill Farm was home to a 60-head herd of Guernsey milk cows, prized for their milk’s high fat content. More than 170 acres of this scenic property was dedicated to growing hay and grain for the cattle. The farm remained an active dairy until 1960. Since then, the fields have been home to beef cattle, haying operations, and – most recently – protected habitat for many grassland bird species.
Today, The Trustees of Reservations are bringing farming back to Moose Hill Farm. We’ll kick off a new Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program this spring (2013), offering 75 shares of fresh veggies weekly to folks who live or work in the surrounding towns. Also on the horizon: A farm stand open to the public, starting in June. And, what would a farm be without some animals? When you visit the farm next summer, you’ll meet a flock of laying hens who will produce farm fresh eggs; and, pork and beef production will happen in the next few years. The farm will continue to strike a balance between active agriculture and conservation efforts on the property.
Buying a share at Moose Hill Farm means you, as a CSA member, will be helping to create and support a vibrant community farm. Members will receive vegetables each week throughout the growing season, and have the chance to "pick your own" crops, as well. And, just when you aren’t ready to let the growing season go, you’ll also have the opportunity to extend your CSA membership into a winter share. Interesting (and fun!) volunteer opportunities and work-for-shares are also available for folks who want to get their hands dirty at the farm.
As a CSA member, you will also be helping to feed the hungry! We are partnering with local hunger-relief and food-access organizations in the surrounding communities, and a portion of your membership will go directly to these efforts. For this first season, 3% of the cost of each share will go directly to aid produce donations – this comes out to a $1 donation per week for the length of the CSA program. This will provide enough money for the farm to supply local food pantries with at least 1,000 pounds of fresh, nutritious produce. As Moose Hill Farm grows in size over time, we plan to strengthen and grow our hunger relief mission (in addition to offering more CSA shares), to help make sure everyone in our community has access to healthy vegetables.
We'd love for you to join our new farm community and take part in all the wonderful opportunities to come - stop by the farm this fall and winter to see the farm in action! |
