Once cultivated by the Wampanoag nation and later by European settlers, the 162-acre Katama Farm nearly turned into a 700-lot subdivision in 1970s before forward-thinking locals stepped in. In 2005, The FARM Institute, an island nonprofit devoted to connecting children to agriculture, made it their headquarters and restored the buildings and grounds.

After becoming a Trustees-managed property in 2016, today the farm hosts educational camp programs for local and summer visiting children ages 2-17, along with programming for Vineyard students and ongoing classes and workshops for adults. A state-of-the-art teaching kitchen and event space, completed in 2019, offers farm-to-table cooking experiences for all ages. Visitors can also wander the grounds on a pair of flat, under-two-mile walking trails along the south pastures.

The farm is open for visitors to stroll the barn, visit with the animals, or walk through the Friendship Garden. When To Visit
During the summer season, the barn is open to the public MondayFriday 9AM-5PM and Saturday 9AM-12NOON. Off season, the barn is open Tuesday-Friday 9AM-4PM and Saturday 9AM-12NOON.

The FARM Institute is located at 14 Aero Ave in Edgartown Massachusetts. When heading to South Beach, we are located in between “right” and “left” fork and can be accessed by either side.

During operational hours, we have restrooms available to the public in our office/kitchen/market area.

Accessible Features:

• Teaching Kitchen/market/offices are wheelchair accessible.
• Accessible bathrooms and parking.
• Garden pathways and trails are flat and wide, however, an all-terrain wheelchair is recommended.

• Dogs are allowed leashed on our trails only, dogs are not allowed on our main campus due to our status as a working farm.
• Some of our fences are electric, please approach fencing with caution and check for yellow signs along the fence stating if it is electrified.
• Livestock can be unpredictable and dangerous, do not enter any animal stalls or fields without a staff member. Do not feed any of our livestock.
• The farm fields are open to hunting with written permission. Learn more about hunting on Trustees properties.
• PHOTOGRAPHY: We do not allow photography sessions during any youth educational programs. Please reach out to schedule a session.
