A Brief History of Appleton Farms CSA

The CSA Appleton Farms started up in the 2002 growing season, with about 100 shareholders. Since then, we've grown by about 100 shares annually, to our full size of 500 shareholders and 25 acres under cultivation. Each growing season has presented unique challenges and rewards.

Community Supported Agriculture helps to continue a 360-year-old tradition of sustainable agriculture at Appleton Farms. The Appleton Family gifted the farm to The Trustees of Reservations in 1998, with the desire that their family land remain in active agricultural production. Nine generations of the Appleton family have lived and farmed here - we take seriously the charge to maintain and improve this land for the next nine generations and beyond.

In addition to the CSA, the general farm staff cares for nearly 1,000 acres of wetlands, woodlands, croplands and open meadows. The livestock farmers milk 40 Jersey cows and manage a herd of beef cattle. Educational programs and tours run year round, and countless volunteers support the farm. Please join us as a member of The Trustees of Reservations, and as a CSA shareholder!
