Property Description 75 acres | Established 1999

Originally part of a picturesque, early-twentieth-century country estate, Weir River Farm is managed to preserve its historic pastoral and agricultural character and to provide diverse wildlife habitats, including upland grasslands, a rapidly declining habitat in the Commonwealth. The property is comprised of ten acres of fields and pastures surrounded by oak and red cedar woodlands. The Weir River passes through the northwest edge of the farm.

From the entrance at the top of Turkey Hill, a footpath meanders downhill through open fields and woods. At a fork in the trail, one path leads to the barnyard. The other path leads across a grassy avenue before entering "The Grove," woods with an open understory reminiscent of a British woodland.  Sections of the trail within the Grove have been beautified to create a "Garden Path" whose borders are planted of flowering shrubs and perennials.

Trails on Weir River Farm are linked to those in adjacent Whitney & Thayer Woods, whose trails are connected to those in Wompatuck State Park and the town's Triphammer Conservation Area.  This extensive trail network provides visitors with access to the largest contiguous tract of open space on the South Shore - nearly 5,000 acres in all.

Weir River Farm was the former home of Polly Thayer Starr, whose paintings and drawings have been exhibited and admired at museums in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia for more than 70 years.
