| Job Summary |
| The Trustees of Reservations are seeking an Assistant Superintendent in the South Shore Management Unit (SSMU). The Assistant Superintendent assists with the management of 8 properties on the south shore of Massachusetts, which are open to the public and total more than 1,300 acres. The properties represent a wide diversity of natural features including forests, beaches, Rivers, open fields, wetlands, and a farm. The SSMU contains five residences, a barn, and other structures. |

| Responsibilities |
The Assistant Superintendent’s responsibilities can be categorized into the following areas:
Property Stewardship: • Organizational capacity building • Personnel supervision and development Specifically, the Assistant Superintendent’s duties are: Property stewardship: • Assist with the protection and management of all properties within the SSMU, following The Trustees’ Management Guidelines, specific property management plans, and other effective land management techniques. • Supervise and/or perform the following landscape related tasks - turf maintenance including mowing, fertilizing, and herbicide applications; tree and shrub pruning and removal; and trail creation and maintenance. • Assist and oversee agricultural product production, such as cut flowers, crops, beef, eggs, pork etc • Assist with snow removal, which may require working overtime and flexible hours. • Perform building maintenance projects, both interior and exterior. Projects may involve, but are not limited to, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting and masonry work. • Ensure that all equipment is in good working order through preventative maintenance. • Assist with the care of domestic livestock and other farm animals. • In cooperation with the Superintendent, oversee routine maintenance of all structures as well as oversee larger capital projects undertaken by staff and by contractors. • Attend and/or represent The Trustees before local committees, community groups, and Trustees committees, as necessary. • Maintain good and productive relationships with our neighbors, visitors, town officials, businesses, and The Trustees' staff from other divisions and regions. • Ensure some flexibility to work on weekends and/or evenings to prepare for special events or to ensure the safety of the visiting public, as well as, on occasion, be willing to work overtime in order to complete daily tasks. • Be able to work independently and as part of a team and be willing to learn new skills in order to meet the broad range of tasks that will be assigned to the position, including applying for applicable licenses. • Be willing to assist with projects on other Trustees properties as required and perform additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Organizational capacity building: • Work with the Superintendent to identify funding opportunities to support organizational priorities. • Work with the Superintendent to identify meaningful volunteer opportunities. • Provide oversight and recognition of volunteer efforts in the field. • Work with the Superintendent and Property Advisory Committees to increase local membership. • Assist the Superintendent with administrative tasks and planning.
Personnel supervision and development: • Supervise day-to-day work schedules set forth by the Superintendent and oversee and provide leadership for the management unit’s personnel, including one full-time maintenance staff, one part-time farm assistant, and several seasonal staff and volunteers. • Ensure all seasonal staff conduct business in a professional manner, are familiar with all facets of The Trustees, and are comfortable and competent in communicating our mission and aspirations to the public. • Protect employees and visitors by promoting and maintaining a safe work environment and holding safety orientations for staff and volunteers. |

| Qualifications, Skills, & Work Experience |
Qualified Candidates would:
• Have an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Arboriculture, Horticulture, Wildlife or Park Management or another natural resource field and 3-5 years experience in these areas or related fields. • Have leadership skills which contribute to the personal and professional development of staff members • Enjoy working with a diversity of people, have excellent people skills, and be comfortable and competent working with committees and speaking to the public. • Have awareness of and concern for aesthetic quality in all aspects of landscape management. • Be able to work independently and unsupervised as well as work cooperatively and demonstrate leadership in groups. • Have experience in grounds keeping, arboriculture, horticulture, turf management, and ability to maintain a historic landscape. • Have experience maintaining structures and their systems. • Be able to handle the physical demands of the job. • Have excellent writing skills and sound computer skills. • Have significant experience using a chainsaw, snowplow, tractor, and other equipment. • Be able to repair and maintain equipment. • Be able to meet visitors at properties with confidence, charm, and tact. • Have an eye for detail. • Have a good attitude, willingness to be flexible, and a commitment to achieving the goals of the SSMU. |

| Additional Information |
| The Assistant Superintendent reports to the Superintendent of the South Shore Management Unit. This is a full-time, non-exempt position located at Hingham, MA. The starting salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position provides an excellent fringe benefits package, including generous vacation and sick leave, group health insurance and, after one year, a defined contribution pension plan and Group Life and Total Disability Insurance. |
