The Trustees of Reservations’ Islands Regional Office of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, would like to announce the Environmental Education Intern I, available during the summer of 2008, to current undergraduate or graduate students.
Since 1891, The Trustees of Reservations have been saving the Massachusetts landscape for people to enjoy. We care for more than 25,000 acres on 99 reservations and inspire conservation awareness through a variety of educational programs. We are a nonprofit organization supported by our more than 40,500 members. From the Berkshire mountains to the beaches of Cape Cod and the Islands, we have worked to protect more than 53,000 acres of land across the state.
On Martha’s Vineyard, The Trustees own and care for 5 stunning properties and hold management over two additional properties. Opportunities to engage young people and families will be numerous.
Description of tasks:
The Environmental Education Assistant I will work closely with the Education and Interpretation Coordinator to ensure that the children and families visiting properties of The Trustees of Reservations on Martha’s Vineyard are provided programs of excellent value.
The Intern works a 24-hour work week during an 8-week season (June 30 – August 22, 2008); housing with other seasonal staff or interns in Vineyard Haven may be available. The Intern will have the opportunity to work at numerous Trustees properties on Martha’s Vineyard. These properties include Long Point Wildlife Refuge, Menemsha Hills Reservation, Parker Property, Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge, and Mytoi. Programming includes adult sunset hikes, family creatures-of-the-night walks, beach and seashore programming, and various other tasks and programs as needed. Both daytime and evening work is required.
The applicant must have completed 1 year in an early childhood education program, or environmental/outdoor education program, or equivalent experience working with children and families. Candidate must have an outgoing and willing attitude, be calm under pressure, enjoy meeting people, feel comfortable working with small children ages 3 - 10, will feel at ease leading interpretive walks for families and children, and must be willing to work a flexible schedule. The Intern must have a valid driver’s license and must successfully pass a CORI. The successful candidate must feel comfortable providing outdoor programs in both beach and woods settings with the possibility of inclement weather on a daily basis, and must feel comfortable leading groups independently after the appropriate trainings have been completed. The intern must be prepared to work day and/or night shifts in remote locations.
