         | Property Description | 74 acres | Established 1983 | While most of Stavros Reservation protects more than fifty acres of salt marsh, its most popular feature is White's Hill, a coastal drumlin that offers panoramic views of Crane Beach, the Crane Wildlife Refuge (Choate Island), and Halibut Point. A half-mile loop trail leads through an open field and enters the woods at the base of White's Hill. It climbs gradually to a field at the crest of the hill and then loops back down the hill through a thicket of Devil's walking stick, broken only by a small hillside clearing that offers views over the salt marshes to Castle Hill. At the top of the hill stands the fieldstone base of a former fifty-foot-high, three-level tower constructed in the 1890s by Mr. E. Sargent for Lamont G. Burnham, Esq. who owned the property at the time. It was said that, in its day, the structure was used as a pumping tower to supply water to the Burnham farm. It was also said that Mr. Burnham stationed a sentry in the tower to lookout for coal barges rounding Halibut Point. When the sentry identified a boat belonging to Mr. Burnham, he or Mr. Burnham would ride a fast horse to Newburyport to put a price on the cargo. |
