Property Description 227 acres | Established 1897

In 1897, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., acting as acquisition agent for Augustus Hemenway, deeded to The Trustees of Reservations twenty-one acres on the Charles River known as Rocky Narrows, the "Gates of the Charles." Considering its rugged woodlands, peaceful water views, and commanding scenic overlooks, the landscape's protection had long been a goal of pioneers of the organization.

From small beginnings, the Reservation has grown. Today visitors to Rocky Narrows use an extensive trail system to explore the diverse natural wonders of Rocky Narrows and the adjacent Sherborn Town Forest. At river level, a canoe landing connects to a two-mile loop trail that follows the river's edge south before arriving at the Rocky Narrows Overlook. This ledge requires some effort to reach, but it rewards visitors with views of steep, hemlock-clad rock cliffs that form a narrow river passage -- the landmark that gives the Reservation its name.

Further south along the trail is a granite bluff that bears the name King Philip, the Wampanoag chief who warred against the early settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. From King Philip's Overlook, visitors can view the farmland and marshes of Medfield and Millis, with Noon Hill on the distant horizon.
