The Putnam Conservation Institute (PCI) seeks to increase the capacity of the conservation community to protect, care for, and interpret the natural and cultural resources of Massachusetts. PCI works to further partnerships and share knowledge among land conservationists, historic preservationists, watershed associations, state agencies, municipal commissions and others. The Trustees of Reservations launched PCI in 2003 with the knowledge that no single nonprofit organization or agency can do all the work necessary to safeguard our state's beloved land, historic structures, streams, shores, wetlands, and so much more. By investing in the conservation community in the broadest sense, The Trustees believe that we can make a bigger difference- together.

The purpose of this booklet is to help planning boards answer the following questions:
- What is an “ancient way”?
- Is an “ancient way” necessarily a public way for ANR (approval not required) purposes?
- Does being an “ancient way” help qualify a private way for ANR approval?
