Putnam Conservation Institute
The Trustees of Reservations’ Putnam Conservation Institute (PCI) seeks to increase the capacity of the conservation community to protect, care for, and interpret the natural and cultural resources of Massachusetts. By offering workshops, conferences, and connections for land conservationists, urban park advocates, historic preservationists, watershed associations, state agencies, municipal commissions, and others, we believe that we can make a bigger difference- together.ConservationCommon.org

As landowners, agencies, and private companies look ever closer at the possibility of generating renewable energy close to home, many new questions arise--where should the infrastructure go, and where should it not go? Who decides and how? What are the ecological impacts in the short- and long-term? Who stands to benefit financially? Who loses?
This seminar is designed for staff and volunteers from planning boards, conservation commissions, open space committees and land trusts, elected officials and others who care about conservation and sustainability in their communities. Focusing on Massachusetts laws, geography, and politics, this seminar will provide participants with strategies for addressing the conflicts that arise as communities wrestle with the dual objectives of land conservation and new investments in renewable energy. Space is limited; pre-registration required.

As municipalities and nonprofit community organizations are increasingly called upon to build alliances or coalitions to advocate for their goals, staff from these organizations are challenged to develop new leadership skills to foster successful collaborations with coalition partners. This course is designed to provide mid-level staff with hands-on experience in facilitating productive meetings, communicating, negotiating and resolving conflicts. Participants will also acquire skills needed to decide if and how to collaborate and to build more effective partnerships. Case studies during the two-day workshop will examine issues surrounding the farm bill and farmland protection. Space is limited; pre-registration required.
Co-sponsored by The Trustees of Reservations' Putnam Conservation Institute, the Consensus Building Institute, and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy.

The purpose of this booklet is to help planning boards answer the following questions:
- What is an “ancient way”?
- Is an “ancient way” necessarily a public way for ANR (approval not required) purposes?
- Does being an “ancient way” help qualify a private way for ANR approval?
