Boys and Girls Club and The Trustees Announce a Quest for Downtown Holyoke

Holyoke, Massachusetts - One hundred members of the Holyoke Boys and Girls Club (HBGC) have developed a Quest of Downtown Holyoke.  Together with The Trustees of Reservations, they are holding a Quest Kick-off on Saturday, June 3 from 1-3pm. This family-oriented event is a great opportunity to learn about the history of Holyoke and see how the city has changed over time by using clues and hand-made maps to explore and tell stories about the landscape.

Aimee Gelinas, The Trustees Education Coordinator, has been working with the HBGC youth to develop the Downtown Holyoke Quest for several months. “The youth have explored many corners of Holyoke and discovered so many new and interesting things,” says Gelinas. “They have learned to look very closely at their surroundings and have discovered features and landmarks that they've never noticed before, even though they're all familiar with the City.”

To develop the Quest, the youth did historical research, explored the City, and created all the clues and artwork for the Quest map. “It was so cool to imagine living in the 1800's and going into the old Hotel Hamilton to sleep”, said Amanda, an HBGC youth.

The Quest begins at The Trustees Office in Holyoke and will lead people through the heart of the downtown area. Holyoke Boys and Girls Club youth will be on hand to lead people through the Quest and to share their own stories of Holyoke.

Together with our neighbors, The Trustees of Reservations protect the distinct character of our communities and inspire a commitment to our special places. Our passion is to share with everyone the irreplaceable natural and cultural treasures that we care for.

The event is free of charge. To register or for more information, please call 413-532-1631, ext.13.
