Natural History Tours
The Trustees of Reservations offers a selection of guided and self-guided natural history tours that help adults and children alike explore the natural wonders of several properties on Cape Cod & the Islands, the Berkshires, and the Southeast Region.  All guided tours are led by expert naturalists, and proceeds directly support conservation work at the property.

CAPE COD & THE ISLANDS

Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge, Martha's Vineyard

Natural History Tour
Enjoy a 2 ½ hour oversand vehicle exploration across Chappaquiddick’s barrier beach! Your guided tour includes an exploration of the rare maritime forests that inhabit the farthest reaches of the island. You’ll also stop at the Cape Poge Lighthouse to learn its history, climb the spiral staircase, and witness breathtaking views of Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod and Nantucket! Relax and enjoy the birding, beachcombing, and photographic moments this journey has to offer, as you discover the fascinating natural history of Cape Poge.

Program duration: 2.5 hours

Lighthouse Tour
Climb the spiral staircase of the century-old wooden lighthouse, and discover intriguing stories of the light keepers who watched over these ocean waters for nearly 150 years.  Views from atop the lighthouse can be breathtaking, and the guided tour of the barrier beach at Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge makes this trip perfect for families and people of all ages!

Program duration: 1.5 hours

    Wildlife Kayak or Canoe Tour
    Cape Poge and Wasque are home to a variety of wildlife. A Trustees naturalist will guide you in exploring the beauty of the salt water world from the perfect vantage point, a kayak or canoe!  You may catch a glimpse of heron, osprey, and terns flying overhead, and crabs, sea sponge, or clams in the water below you;. Experience a remote Trustees beach midway through your tour and become inspired by the sights and sounds of this special place.

    Program duration: 2.5 hours

    Fishing Discovery Tour
    Join our expert fishing guide on an oversand vehicle tour and learn the artful skills of surfcasting, reading the water, and filleting a fish.  You’ll experience the natural beauty of legendary fishing beaches such as Wasque and the Cape Poge Gut and try your luck at catching, and identifying species including striped bass, bluefish, and false albacore.   Fishing poles, lures, and line are provided.  Bring a snack and big sense of adventure!

    Program duration: 4 hours

    Poucha Pond Self-Guided Discovery Tour
    Reap the benefits of Trustees membership as you paddle through Poucha Pond at your own pace.  With a waterproof self-guided map in hand, paddle the salt waters of Poucha Pond and discover the effects humans – and nature – have had on the beautiful habitats that surround this area.

    Members only. 4 hours for $25, 8 hours for $35 (per canoe or kayak).

    Note: For all tours, please arrive on time! Carpool or bicycle to Mytoi departure point to avoid long delays at the Edgartown-Chappaquiddick ferry. Tours are weather dependent. Appropriate clothing recommended. Bring binoculars, camera, film, refreshments, sun block, sun glasses, and insect repellent.

    Membership in The Trustees of Reservations is not transferable; therefore, member cards may not be used by nonmembers to quality for member discounts on tours. Tour participants may purchase an introductory membership in The Trustees of Reservations at half-price at both the Individual and Family levels in order to participate in the Fishing Tour or Poucha Pond Self-Guided Discovery Tour.

    Long Point Wildlife Refuge, Martha's Vineyard

    Kayak Discovery Tour (Long Point)

    Explore the beauty of one of the rarest habitats in the world, a coastal sandbarrens, as you kayak with a Trustees naturalist at Long Point Wildlife Refuge.  Witness breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the refuge habitats, as you enjoy your paddle throughout Tisbury Great Pond. 

    Your tour begins at a special tours-only parking area located at the off-season entrance gate at the end of Deep Bottom Road.

    Duration: 1.5 hours
    Frequency:  Daily -- June 15th – Sept 15th
    Times: 8:30, 11, 1:30

    Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge, Nantucket Island

    Natural History Tour
    Join our naturalist guide on an over-sand vehicle tour through Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. Witness Nantucket's most expansive saltmarsh, learn about geology, ecology, and history of this special place and climb the Great Point Lighthouse for an incredible "birds eye" view.

    Duration: 2.5 hours
    Departure Point: Wauwinet Gatehouse.
    Days/Times: June through October, daily, 9:30AM and 1:30PM.
    Limit: 8 per tour (including children)

    Tickets: Trustees members*: adult $30, child (12 & under) $15; nonmembers: adult $40, child (12 & under) $15.

    Note: Please arrive on time! Tour vehicles depart promptly on-schedule. Smoking and alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the tour vehicle. Tours are weather dependent. Appropriate clothing recommended. Bring binoculars, camera, film, refreshments, sun block, sun glasses, and insect repellent. You are traveling to a remote location, so remember that medical or emergency facilities are not available. However, all tour vehicles carry two-way radios.

    BERKSHIRES MASSACHUSETTS

    Bartholomew's Cobble, Sheffield

    Housatonic Paddles
    Paddle the winding Housatonic with a naturalist guide and look for wildlife. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, and binoculars.

    Duration: 3 hours
    Departure Point: Bartholomew's Cobble Visitor Center.
    Days/Times: Memorial Day, May 26  |  9am – 12noon
    Sundays, June 1, 8, 15 (father’s day)  8:30 – 11:30am
    Saturdays, June 21, 28  |  8:30 – 11:30am
    Limit: Guide plus 11 tour participants (6 canoes, 2 per canoe)

    Tickets: Trustees members: adult $24, child (6-12) $12; nonmembers: adult $30, child (6-12) $15.  Buy a family membership the day of the tour and get 2 adult tickets for the price of one. Cost includes all required equipment.

    SOUTHEAST MASSACHUSETTS

    World's End, Hingham

    Kayak World’s End!
    Join a naturalist guide and explore the rich and varied habitats of this unique peninsula. Discover spider crabs and sea pickle, egrets and estuaries, rolling hills and rocky shorelines. Participants will learn basic paddling techniques, local ecology, and the natural history of World’s End while taking in spectacular views of Boston Harbor. 

    Duration: 2.5 hour trips depart twice a day
    Departure Point: World’s End Ranger Station
    Days/Times: Daily, June through September
    Limit: Limit 10 per tour.

    Tickets: Members: Adult $30, Child (under 15) $15. Nonmembers: Adult $35, Child $18. Equipment provided; tandem kayaks available.
