Greenhead flies are biting horseflies with greenheads found along coastal areas adjacent to large salt marshes. Greenhead season usually runs for two to three weeks from mid-July through the first week in August. During this time their abundance fluctuates daily. Greenheads are most active in the morning until about 10:30AM, and again later in the afternoon. They are less active during the middle of the day. Greenheads are more likely to be prevalent on hot, muggy days when there is no breeze. On breezy days, greenheads are less prevalent, especially on the beachfront.
Visitors can call the Crane Beach Hotline for greenhead information (978.356.4354).
