Powisset Farm Serves Up a Farm-tastic New Program – Powisset Cooks!

Hands-On Culinary Workshops in the New State-of-the-Art Farm Kitchen and Family-Style Gatherings featuring Powisset Farm’s Fresh Veggies and other Locally Sourced Foods

Dover, MAAugust 14, 2014Powisset Farm in Dover, a popular agricultural property of The Trustees of Reservations, recently launched a new food-and-farm-based program – Powisset Cooks! Modeled after a successful program at The Trustees’ Appleton Farms property on the North Shore, the year-round program offers a diverse selection of hands-on culinary workshops as well as farm-to-table and family-style gatherings. Based out of Powisset’s newly renovated barn and state-of-the-art farmhouse kitchen, Powisset Cooks! is designed for all who love food, cooking, farms and community.

Trustees Engagement Program Manager Beth Zschau notes “Powisset Cooks! is a fresh and exciting way to invite the community to roll up their sleeves, dig in to the land, and get inspired to cook with local foods. These field-to-fork programs reinforce our commitment to supporting local and sustainable food sources right here in our communities.”

Key ingredients for the workshops include a quick trip to the fields for some light harvesting and hands-on cooking and instruction from the culinary educator as well as sharing and sampling the delicious foods along the way.  Whether it’s a how-to on pickling or a workshop on creative solutions for the lunchbox, participants will go home feeling full and inspired from this farm experience with new skills and tasty recipes to cook and share at home.

Powisset Cooks! is also offering private workshops. Groups can work with the Culinary Educator or a professional chef instructor to create a customized farm-fresh workshop to be prepared and shared together, family-style, in the beautiful barn or farm-side picnic tables. A perfect activity to share with friends or for a couples night out or special celebration, farm tours and field walks are also available as part of the package. What better way to spend an evening than learning new cooking skills, eating yummy food, and breaking bread with friends or family?

From the Fields: Herb Breads and Tasty Herb Dipping Sauces

Herbs are one of the many unsung culinary heroes; when used well, herbs can add so much depth and flavor to a dish. Join Powisset Cooks! in the field for a short harvest followed by an exciting hands-on exploration in the kitchen with our Culinary Educator. You will learn new and easy ways to infuse herbs into breads, sauces and more.

For the Pantry: Tomato Preservation
Tuesday, September 23 | 5:30-7:30PM

Do you have an abundance of tomatoes? Do you want to learn creative ways to savor these sweet treats of summer? Join Powisset Cooks! in the field for a short harvest followed by an exciting hands-on exploration in the kitchen with our Culinary Educator to create sauces, oven roasted tomatoes and more. 

Field to Lunchbox: Creative Solutions for Lunchbox Boredom
Sunday, September 28 | 2-4PM
Trustees Members: $35. Nonmembers: $45
Are you looking for fun new ways to integrate farm fresh vegetables into your kids’ school lunches? Join Powisset Cooks! in the field for a short harvest followed by an exciting hands-on exploration in the kitchen with our Culinary Educator. You will create treats for the lunch box that parents and children will enjoy making and eating. Potential vegetable highlights for this month: tomatoes, peppers or eggplant. We recommend a one to one ratio of parent to children. Ages 6 and up welcome. Price includes parent and one child.

Also coming soon to the Powisset Cooks! line-up are Professional Guest Chefs lead cooking workshops and Friday Farm Dinners that will feature a seasonal family-friendly menu, old-fashioned lawn games, live music and more.
