Putnam Conservation Institute
Putnam Conservation Institute
The Trustees of Reservations’ Putnam Conservation Institute (PCI) seeks to increase the capacity of the conservation community to protect, care for, and interpret the natural and cultural resources of Massachusetts. By offering workshops, conferences, and connections for land conservationists, urban park advocates, historic preservationists, watershed associations, state agencies, municipal commissions, and others, we believe that we can make a bigger difference- together.

Upcoming Events

Facilitation Skills & Best Practices for Leading Partnerships, Coalitions & Alliances
The success of nonprofits’ goals and communities’ visions frequently rely on effective partnerships, coalitions and alliances—and this generally means LOTS of meetings and discussions. What differentiates a well-run, productive meeting from one that feels like a waste of time? What preparation and follow up techniques lead to consistent results? What discussion-management techniques work in the real world? This one-day facilitation course, taught by the Consensus Building Institute, will help you master key strategies and best practices to make the most of  your partners’ time together. Whether you are working with a broad-based coalition, multiple stakeholders, or a small working group, the interactive exercises, presentations and large-group discussions in this workshop will help you design well-run, collaborative meetings to accomplish shared goals. Experienced trainers will share their insights for advancing process objectives—such as sharing information, developing joint recommendations, or planning for implementation of a complex agreement.

Resolving Land Use Disputes
Throughout the country, communities of all sizes are relying on new approaches to resolving land use disputes—a consensus building approach that brings all the relevant stakeholders together in face-to-face dialog assisted by a professional mediator. This courts will teach you land use planning stakeholders how to use mediation to help build consensus on difficult land use and stewardship issues. Participants will work with cases involving land development and community changes, explore the link between mediation theory and practice, and determine whether and when mediation is an appropriate conflict resolution tool.

 INFORMATION AND RESOURCES

“ANRs and Ancient Ways” by Alexandra Dawson”

The purpose of this booklet is to help planning boards answer the following questions:

  • What is an “ancient way”?
  • Is an “ancient way” necessarily a public way for ANR (approval not required) purposes?
  • Does being an “ancient way” help qualify a private way for ANR approval?

* From the Massachusetts Easement Defense Subcommittee (MEDS)...

"Operating Principles for Land Conservation Organizations" as adopted by the Massachusetts Land Trust Coalition in October 2005.
